Holidays in the Egadi islands: What to do?

The Egadi Islands are an archipelago of islands and islets located off the west coast of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. Consisting mainly of the three main islands, Favignana, Levanzo and Marettimo, together with several smaller islets such as Formica, Maraone and others, the Egadi Islands are famous for their natural beauty, crystal clear waters, rich history and delicious Sicilian cuisine.

The Turquoise Pearl: Favignana, Egadi Treasure

Favignana, the largest of the 3 Egadi Islands, often called the ‘blue butterfly’, is an extraordinary destination offering a wide range of activities, sights to visit and culinary delights.

Main activities to do in Favignana

Bicycle Exploration: one of the most popular activities on the island is bicycle exploration. Favignana is relatively small and well connected by a network of cycle paths that allow visitors to explore the island in an environmentally friendly and fun way.

Snorkelling and Diving: the crystal-clear waters around Favignana are ideal for snorkelling and diving. Numerous sites along the coast offer the opportunity to admire the rich marine life and breathtaking seabed.

Visit the Cave di Tufo: the disused tuff quarries, once used for the extraction of limestone, are now one of the island’s main attractions. The most famous is the ‘Cala Rossa’, also known as the ‘Grotta degli Innamorati’, a bay characterised by red rocks that create a breathtaking view.

Boat Tours Around the Island: by booking a boat tour, you can explore the natural beauty of the island from a different perspective. Along the way, you can visit remote coves, sea caves and spectacular reefs.

Main beaches in Favignana

Cala Rossa: perhaps the most famous beach on Favignana, Cala Rossa is famous for its turquoise waters and rocky landscape. It can be reached by bicycle or on foot from the centre of the island and also offers the opportunity to explore the ancient tuff quarries.

Cala Azzurra: this small bay is located on the west coast of Favignana and is characterised by crystal-clear waters and fine sand. It is an ideal place for swimming, snorkelling or simply relaxing in the sun.

Lido Burrone: located on the eastern side of the island, this beach is very popular with visitors for its golden sand and shallow waters, making it suitable for families with children. It also has tourist facilities such as bars and restaurants.

Cala Azzurra Beach: not far from Cala Rossa, this smaller beach is surrounded by rocks and offers crystal-clear waters ideal for snorkelling. It is less crowded than some of Favignana’s other popular beaches.

Cala Rotonda: this enchanting bay, located on the western side of the island, can only be reached by sea or via a hiking trail. It is a quiet and secluded place, perfect for those seeking a more intimate and wild experience.

Attractions to visit in Favignana

Santa Caterina Fortress: this ancient fortress is located on the eastern tip of Favignana and offers a panoramic view of the town and the sea. It is a perfect place to watch the sunset or take a relaxing walk along the walls.

Museo della Tonnara: Favignana has a long tradition of tuna fishing. The Tonnara Museum offers a fascinating insight into the history and culture of this activity, with displays of fishing gear, period photos and more.

Village of Lido Burrone: this enchanting bay is one of Favignana’s most popular beaches. With white sand and crystal clear waters, it is a great place to relax in the sun and take a refreshing swim.

Levanzo: secret shelter of the rock paintings

Main activities

Exploration of the Genovese Cave: this cave is famous for its prehistoric cave paintings, dating back some 12,000 years. A guided excursion allows you to explore this unique archaeological site and admire the ancient artistic evidence of humanity.

Snorkelling and Diving: the crystal-clear waters around Levanzo offer a variety of sites ideal for snorkelling and diving. Visitors can explore the seabed rich with life, including shipwrecks and coral formations.

Nature Excursions: Levanzo is surrounded by unspoilt wilderness. Trekking enthusiasts can explore the trails that lead through breathtaking landscapes, including the rocky coastline, pine forests and scenic hills.

Relax on the Beaches: Levanzo, although a relatively small island, boasts some enchanting and picturesque beaches that offer visitors an unforgettable experience. Here are some of the best beaches on the island:

Cala Dogana: located near the island’s main harbour, this beach is easily accessible and offers golden sand and crystal clear waters. It is surrounded by characteristic white buildings and offers a breathtaking view of the harbour and fishing boats.

Cala Minnola: this small bay is hidden among rocky cliffs and can only be reached by sea or via a hiking trail. Its secluded location makes it perfect for those seeking tranquillity and isolation. The waters here are incredibly clear, ideal for snorkelling and swimming.

Cala Fredda: located on the north-eastern side of the island, Cala Fredda is a wild and unspoilt beach. Surrounded by cliffs and Mediterranean vegetation, this bay offers an evocative and peaceful natural environment. Access may be a little more difficult than on other beaches, but its natural beauty is definitely worth the effort.

Cala Tramontana: on the north-western side of the island, Cala Tramontana is another enchanting and secluded bay. It is surrounded by high cliffs and offers white sand and crystal-clear waters. This beach is ideal for those who wish to immerse themselves in unspoilt nature and enjoy a quiet day at the beach.

Cala Minnone: located on the south-eastern side of the island, Cala Minnone is one of the largest and most popular beaches on Levanzo. It offers clear sand and transparent waters, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. It is surrounded by a sheltered bay and offers spectacular views of the sea and the surrounding mountains. These are just some of the breathtaking beaches Levanzo has to offer. Each one has its own unique charm and is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the island.

Attractions to visit in Levanzo

Grotta del Genovese: this cave is a unique archaeological site housing prehistoric cave paintings.

Church of San Leonardo: located in the heart of the village, this church dates back to the 18th century and is an important testimony to local religious architecture.

St Catherine’s Tower: this 16th century coastal tower offers a spectacular panoramic view of the island and the surrounding sea.

Archaeological Museum: located in the centre of the island, this museum exhibits archaeological artefacts found on the island, including prehistoric artefacts and ancient naval remains.

Secrets of Marettimo: An Island to Discover

Marettimo is a magical and remote island in the Egadi Islands archipelago, located off the west coast of Sicily. Characterised by wild landscapes, crystal clear waters and a rich marine history, it offers a wide range of activities for visitors seeking adventure, relaxation and discovery.

Main activities

Boat Excursions and Snorkelling: Marettimo is surrounded by crystal clear waters rich in marine life. A boat excursion around the island or to other destinations such as the Grotta del Presepio offers the opportunity to snorkel and discover the beauty of the underwater world.

Trekking and Hiking: the island is criss-crossed by a network of trails that lead through breathtaking landscapes. Hikes to Mount Falcone, the highest point on the island, or along the rocky coastline offer spectacular views and an immersive experience in the wilderness.

Visit the Marine Nature Reserve: the northern part of Marettimo is a marine nature reserve, where you can observe different species of sea birds and snorkel in pristine waters.

Sea Cave Exploration: Marettimo is dotted with numerous sea caves, including the famous Grotta del Presepio and Grotta del Cammello, which can be explored by boat or kayak.

Main beaches

Marettimo, with its rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters, offers some enchanting beaches, although fewer in number than Favignana. Here are some of the island’s main beaches:

Cala Bianca: this enchanting bay, with its white sand and crystal-clear waters, is considered one of Marettimo’s best beaches. It can only be reached by sea or via a hiking trail, guaranteeing a feeling of isolation and tranquillity.

Punta Troia: located on the eastern tip of the island, Punta Troia offers a beautiful beach of pebbles and rocks. It is surrounded by turquoise waters and offers a breathtaking view of the open sea.

Cala del Varo: this small beach is located near the island’s harbour and is easily accessible on foot. It is a pebble beach surrounded by a sheltered bay, ideal for swimming and sunbathing.

Cala Nera: located on the western side of the island, Cala Nera is a wild and remote bay with crystal-clear waters and a small pebble beach. It can only be reached via a hiking trail or by boat.

Cala Rossa: despite sharing a name with the famous Favignana beach, this Cala Rossa is located on Marettimo and is a wilder and less crowded beach. It is surrounded by red rocks and offers ideal waters for snorkelling and swimming.

These are some of Marettimo’s main beaches, each with its own natural beauty and unique atmosphere. Exploring these hidden bays is an unforgettable experience for visitors seeking tranquillity and natural beauty.

Attractions to Visit

TOP!
Wonderful day touring the beautiful Egadi Islands. Unforgettable aperitifs in the beautiful bays, lovely swims, great music! The two-hour break on land in Favignana allowed us to rent a bike and see it from a different perspective! The young captain was very friendly and professional! Thank you!

Septembe 2024
On September 5th, I, my husband, and my two children, ages 2 and 7, took a full-day excursion to Favignana and Levanzo. We traveled on a beautiful, modern rubber dinghy equipped with a bathroom, a fresh water shower, music, snorkeling gear, and floating tubes provided by Tourist Lines. Our skipper was the amazing Fulvio, a 22-year-old who grew up at sea thanks to his family's experiences. We had a wonderful time, especially considering that it can be challenging to spend many hours at sea with a little girl of just over 2 years old, but it was truly a breeze. He offered us drinks whenever we needed them, fresh fruit, and an aperitif with sparkling wine, panelle, and crocchè before returning. I absolutely recommend it to anyone who wants to spend a carefree day enjoying the wonders of the Egadi Islands.

An unforgettable experience! Starting with the skipper Toti, very friendly and knowledgeable, and his assistant, who made us feel at ease as soon as we got on board. Beautiful excursion, with a visit to the coves of Favignana and Levanzo, blue water, calm sea and a visit to sea caves to be discovered! An experience to be repeated for sure ❤️
